As we have learned over the centuries, when it comes to burning witches, it doesn’t really matter if you have burned a real witch or just someone who, in your fevered, partisan, and paranoid imagination, could easily become a witch in the future. It is the burning that is the message.

William Dempsey, 100, of Great Barrington

The family moved the Dempsey's Garage business to Great Barrington in 1937, operating on Railroad Street until 1947 when Mr. Dempsey and his brother, Matthew J. Dempsey Jr., took over the business and moved it to 42 Bridge St.

James Welch, 89, of Salisbury, Conn.

After his honorable discharge from the Coast Guard, Jim returned to Great Barrington and was employed by the New England Electric System (now National Grid), remaining there as the store's manager for 35 years and retiring in 1989.

Anita Macchi, 73, of Sheffield, Mt. Everett graduate

Anita was a communicant of Our Lady of the Valley Church in Sheffield. She was a member of the Sheffield American Legion and the Wyantenuk Country Club.

Architect Hugh Hardy, who restored the Mahaiwe Theatre, dies at 84 in Manhattan

Architect Hugh Hardy’s Berkshire roots ran deep. When redemption for the Mahaiwe was in the offing, a better architect couldn’t be imagined than Hugh Hardy. As a child, he had attended movies at the Mahaiwe during summers.

Mary G. Plungis, 94, formerly of Great Barrington

She was on her high school basketball team at a time when few women played sports.

Arthur ‘Artie’ J. Astore, 86, of Housatonic

Arthur was also a pilot at the Great Barrington Airport, one of Walt Koladza’s best pilots.

Shannon McAllister Brownson, 46, of Great Barrington, owner of Bridlewood Home Furnishings

Shannon was the light in every room, a devoted and loving mother, wife, daughter, sister and friend.
