Nominated for 10 Tony Awards and Winner of the Pulitzer Prize for Drama, Sondheim’s innovative score explores pointillism in sound before opening out into one of the most glorious choral finales in the repertory.
With Uma Thurman’s elegance and nuanced playing, Tom Pecinka’s emotive and visceral credibility, and the other actors’ reality, the play is simply alive onstage.
It’s also ravishingly beautiful with a thoroughly original visual style, and perfectly cast and acted with lyrics articulated with more clarity than I’ve heard before. Director Joe Calarco’s talent lies in heightening the fantasy while preserving the magic.
