Richard Wilbur . . . Urbanity and Humanity

Wilbur was a words-smith extraordinaire, and I have a special fondness for his writing. At a time when lesser poets were beating the drum for free-form modernism, he was quietly perfecting the formal approach with its intricate rhymes and traditional structures. All this served up with wit and elegance.

Historical Commission issues Phase 1 of historic resources survey in Great Barrington

This survey of a portion of Great Barrington's rich catalogue of historic buildings was a significant undertaking for the Historical Commission. It provides the town with the first of a series of reports that provide documentation of sites worthy of preserving and those potentially eligible for listing on the National Register of Historic Places.

The Community Preservation Act (CPA) is a cooperative town and state funding program by which communities may fund projects for open space preservation, creation of affordable housing, preservation of historic buildings and landscapes, and the creation of recreational resources.

Judith E. Rahm, 71, of Great Barrington

Judy devoted her time to helping those around her. For several summers Judy participated in the Fresh Air Fund Program, hosting children from New York City for two weeks to stay with her family. She enjoyed working for Meals on Wheels and always made sure to set aside extra time to spend with those to whom she delivered meals.

Post-intermission fare on New Year's Eve consists of two Bach classics in special Berkshire Bach versions: Brandenburg Concerto No. 1 (what would New Year's be without a Brandenburg?) with its spectacular solos for violin, horns, oboes, bassoon, and percussion, and the brilliant Orchestral Suite No. 3 in D with its three-trumpet-and timpani power and its famous Air for strings.

Eleven projects advance for CPA funds in GB; two eliminated

In the next stage, in which the committee will determine how much funding to recommend for each. The final decision on whether to fund CPA projects is made at Town Meeting in May.
