Nobel Prize Winners . . . some dynamite poetry

Alfred Nobel (1833-1896), the inventor of dynamite, was a chemist, engineer, businessman and, most memorably, philanthropist; he was also a scholar, fluent in Russian, French, English and German. Above all, he loved poetry.

Madaline Seward, 82, of Lee

For many years she was a proud homemaker, raising five sons as well as being the treasurer of Seward’s Tires Inc. for more than 30 years until her retirement in 2005.

Prior to his retirement, Brian worked for 40 years as an operating engineer at Lane Construction Company, where he never missed a day of work and had an impeccable safety record.

Donald ‘Spike’ Pelkey, 30, of Lee

Spike worked for Eastover Resort, Price Chopper and, most recently, as a cook at Michael’s Restaurant in Stockbridge.

BHRSD adopts career, vocational technical education initiatives

There was not the population for a dedicated vocational school and, over time, the number of programs offered dwindled. Now individual fields will not be stressed so much as the habits of mind and preparation to adapt to rapidly changing circumstances.

Mary Murray, 94, of Lee

Mary was employed by the Massachusetts Registry of Motor Vehicles, from where she retired after 30 years of service.

‘The Buzz,’ a new show for schools to promote events, debuts next month

Community Television for the Southern Berkshires will produce the show initially, with the goal of having entirely student-run programs in the near future. The hope is to air at least one show per month.

She was a homemaker and a dedicated volunteer who enjoyed spending time with her friends and family.

Richard Ford, 85, of South Lee

Dick served on the Lee Fire Department from 1956 until 2003 and as deputy chief from 1988 to 2003.

Gerald Middleton, 81, of Otis

He worked out of several different state highway garages and retired in 1992 as a supervisory tree surgeon.

Vocational education making a comeback: Carpentry in the classroom

There are many reasons why young people aren’t going into carpentry in greater numbers. But locally there are at least two programs beginning, perhaps, to change that, at Lee High School and at Monument Mountain Regional High School.

Nancy Collins, 77, of Great Barrington

Nancy was primarily a homemaker. She worked as a bookkeeper at Kmart in Great Barrington for over 20 years.

Chelsea Jennifer Hurley, 21, of Becket

Chelsea had attended Keene (New Hampshire) State College where she majored in graphic design. She was a 2014 graduate of Lee High School.

Carol Brunell, 73, of Rochester Hills, Mich., formerly of Lee

Carol worked as a nurse at Berkshire Medical Center and Framingham Union Hospital.
