Fern Katz will take to the stage in her hometown—on the grounds of TurnPark Art Space in West Stockbridge—where she will present CHASM, an immersive dance, theater, and sound event (including two contemporary dance pieces, one accompanied by live original violin composition) on Saturday, August 27 at 1:30 p.m.
I liken the performance to that of any creative expression: Once the word is on paper, the brushstrokes on canvas, and the dancers on stage, the creator is no longer in control of how audience members interpret their form, which should feel simultaneously liberating and empowering for the audience.
Ms. Brown speaks in her notes of wanting her dancers to represent superheroes, celebrating Black resilience and connection, the claiming of one’s body, the rituals and bonds of Black youth coming of age, and the trials and strengths of individuals and communities.
This layering implicitly conveys that we are all, everywhere, subject to the forces that manipulate minds and exert control. It also suggests that we are in this together, and that, together, we can resist.
The fall concert has been extended into a weekend-long festival, showcasing 24 dance pieces in two programs featuring 45 student dancers in performances created by 20 student and two faculty choreographers.
The partnership with the Paul Taylor Dance Company and the Mahaiwe Performing Arts Center is just one part of what Muddy Brook principal, Mary Berle, calls, “an approach [to education] that combines teamwork and innovation in challenging times.”
Now in real life, Maira Kalman is a famous artist and writer. Her drawings and writing look like they could have been done by a child but don’t let that fool you.
Through the vehicle of dance, Jacob’s Pillow is expanding our understanding of peoples, cultures, perspectives and dance itself, and leading us to ask deeper questions about our own beliefs and preconceptions.
This work is a celebration of the joys, the community, and the integrity of Ms. Brown’s girlhood, gazing back from her adult perspective. Surely, it is a gift to all of us!
