Residents celebrate Independence Day with a community reading of Frederick Douglass’ historic ‘What to the Slave is the Fourth of July?’ speech

"Douglass wrote that democracy is not a set-and-done thing," West Stockbridge Historical Society President Bob Salerno told The Berkshire Edge. "He wrote that democracy is something we have to continue to work on and fight for. It’s an important underpinning of our country.”

Each year five writers across disciplines will be awarded residencies for the Mastheads program that will include a $900 stipend, housing, daily lunch and exclusive use of one of five studios located throughout Pittsfield.
