When the idea of a cultural council was first floated early this year, town officials emphasized that applying for the designation will cost the town nothing and that anyone whose property is included in a cultural district will face no additional limitations on the use of that property.

The partnership with the Paul Taylor Dance Company and the Mahaiwe Performing Arts Center is just one part of what Muddy Brook principal, Mary Berle, calls, “an approach [to education] that combines teamwork and innovation in challenging times.”
The Mahaiwe has hosted more than 17,000 students from 57 schools since the program began. “Our goal is to share these performing arts experiences, engage students with their own unlimited potential, unleash their imaginations, and inspire their spirits.”

The Mahaiwe is poised to eliminate all of its debt, including the theater’s mortgage, and establish its first cash reserve fund. This will provide a level of fiscal stability that is quite extraordinary in an arts organization of its age and size.
“We worked closely with Neel Weber at the High School who coordinated efforts with the other art teachers at Muddy Brook, Monument Valley and Monument Mountain so that we could celebrate youth art work throughout downtown Great Barrington during this construction period on Main Street."

Antigone was the first feminine heroine written for the stage. She was not afraid to show her strength, her pain, and her passion, all attributes that are deep at the heart of flamenco.
