Police describe widespread eye-poking, fingers twisted until breaking, lacerations from slamming heads and throwing, bone-breaking punches, pinching, cutting, and other injuries, much of it done while the victims were held in restraints. So far, 16 former Eagleton School employees face criminal charges.
The Eagleton School in Great Barrington was shut down after its licenses were revoked over what the state said was a systemic culture of staff abuse of students and subsequent cover-ups of that abuse.

In his letter to the editor, Luke Pryjma writes: "Eagleton is a place where our society puts its trauma. We hope it is a place where that trauma can find peace and release gently. That is not always the case."
Eagleton School is accredited by the Massachusetts Department of Education (DOE) and Massachusetts Department of Early Education and Care (EEC). In early January, Great Barrington police began an investigation into allegations of physical and emotional abuse of students.
In Berkshire County, the rate of restraining orders is 37 percent higher than the state average. That may mean violence is particularly high in Berkshire County.
