Sophia B. Hickey, 99, of Great Barrington

Sophia B. Hickey was employed by Becton-Dickinson Co. and retired in 1982. After her retirement she continued to do housework for families in the Great Barrington area.

Sophia B. Hickey, a longtime resident of 5 George St., Great Barrington, died at Fairview Commons Rehabilitation and Nursing Home on Tuesday, Jan. 3. She was born in Buffalo, New York, on Feb. 8, 1917, the daughter of Alexander and Bernice Sklodowski. She was educated in local schools.

Sophia was a loving wife and mother who worked hard all her life. She married Dennis J. Hickey on May 5, 1942, in Torrington, Connecticut. Dennis died on Jan. 23, 1963. Sophia was a communicant of Saint Peter’s Church. She was employed by Becton-Dickinson Co. and retired in 1982. After her retirement she continued to do housework for families in the Great Barrington area.

She is survived by a daughter, Bernice M. Amoroso, and her husband, Anthony Amoroso, of Winsted, Connecticut. She was predeceased by three sisters, Jennie Murawski, Helen Sklodowski and Catherine Sklodowski and also two brothers, Steve and James Sklodowski. The family wishes to thank the entire staff at Fairview Commons for their wonderful care and devotion to their mother, and also wishes to thank HospiceCare in the Berkshires who made her final days more comfortable.

In keeping with Sophia’s wishes, there are no calling hours. A graveside service will be held Friday, Jan. 6, at 10 a.m. at St. Peter’s Cemetery in Great Barrington with the Rev. William P. Murphy officiating. In lieu of flowers, expressions of sympathy may be made to either St. Peter’s Church Building Fund or Fairview Hospital in care of BIRCHES-ROY FUNERAL HOME, 33 South St., Great Barrington, MA 01230.
