To the editor:
Sheffield residents, our town is at a pivotal moment, and we need your help. The Planning Board currently has vacancies that must be filled to ensure we continue shaping Sheffield’s future in a way that reflects our community’s values and vision. If these positions remain unfilled, the Select Board may consider proposing significant changes, such as converting the Planning Board to an appointed body rather than elected, reducing the number of members, and potentially removing critical responsibilities like special permit granting. Please note that none of these changes could be made without town voter approval, but they are changes that may need to be considered to have a functioning board if people don’t step up and participate.
This is an opportunity for you to have a real say in Sheffield’s future. Serving on the Planning Board allows residents to directly influence important decisions that impact development, zoning, and the overall character of our town. Keeping an elected Planning Board ensures that these decisions remain in the hands of those who live here and care deeply about our community and also maintains accountability.
I understand that many people hesitate to step up because they feel intimidated. When I ran in 2021, I had no prior experience in local politics, but I quickly learned that the process is straightforward with the right support. Our town clerk guided me through every step, and my fellow board members helped me get oriented. It is truly a learn-on-the-job experience, and no one is expected to know everything on day one.
Whether you are passionate about responsible growth, preserving Sheffield’s charm, or simply looking for a way to contribute, your involvement can make a meaningful impact.
Anyone interested in serving can contact Sheffield Town Clerk Felecie Joyce for more information. Additionally, I am happy to answer any questions you may have about the role and responsibilities of the Planning Board. Feel free to reach out to me directly at itsrobbiecooper@gmail.com.
