Samia Choueiry Betros of Great Barrington passed away Sept. 18 after a long illness.

Samia Betros

She was predeceased by her husband and best friend of 54 years, George Betros. Born in Lebanon, she came to the United States in 1955 at the age of 21. They ran Betros Market and Package Store, working long hours to put their children through college. When George retired in 2000 and the store was closed, Samia worked at South Wool in Stockbridge. When George became ill, she did not leave his side and took care of him every day until his death in 2010. Samia dedicated her life to caring for her family. She was a devout Christian, a wonderful cook, loved playing cards (especially Pitch),and was generous to a fault. Her generosity went beyond her family, as she and George also helped local townspeople when times were tough for them.

Samia leaves behind her three children: Linda and husband Larry, Joanne and husband Anthony, and Tony and wife Lisa; and her four beloved grandchildren: Lindsay, Joey, Alex and Jenna, their “Teta.” She was predeceased by brothers George and Josef, and leaves behind her sister, Rachide, and brother, Assaad. She also leaves behind many nieces and nephews, both here in the United States and in Lebanon, and her “adopted daughter” Hannah. She was an amazing woman/mom/grandmother and will be missed by many.

Calling hours will be held on Sunday, Sept. 27, from 2 to 4 p.m. at Birches-Roy Funeral Home. A funeral Mass will be held Monday, Sept. 28, at 10 a.m. at St. Peter’s Catholic Church with graveside service thereafter at around 11:15 a.m. in St. Peter’s Cemetery. Masks are required and all COVID-19 guidelines will be followed.
