Great Barrington — Ruth C. Siok, 93 of Housatonic (Mass.) died Tuesday, January 27, 2015 at Fairview Commons Nursing Home with her son David and his family at her side.
She was born in Millbury, Mass., on June 20, 1921 daughter of Edwin and Phoebe “Mae” (Cudworth) Calcutt. Ruth was a graduate class of 1939 from Mary E. Wells High School in Southbridge and was an avid roller and ice skater. She worked for the American Optical Factory in Southbridge, Mass., and then in the cafeterias of Monument Mountain High School as well as of Bard College at Simon’s Rock where the students affectionately called her “Ma Siok.”
Ruth loved gardening and reading. At the Ramsdell Library in Housatonic, you’d be hard pressed to find a book without her name in it. She also had a tender heart for all animals and nursed many back to health. She was a loving wife and mother. Ruth was a communicant of Blessed Teresa Church Corpus Christi Parish.
Ruth’s husband, Thomas “Skeets” Siok, whom she married on January 27, 1945 at Sacred Heart Church in Southbridge, predeceased her on January 4, 1994. Ruth is survived by two sons, Thomas P Siok of Adams, Mass., David Siok and wife Renata of Alford, three daughters, Judith L. Carlson and husband Dale of Sheffield, Susan Giracca and husband Jim of Plymouth, Mass., and Gail M. Winters and husband Edwin of Winsted, Conn., one sister, Jane Bulla of West Laurel, M.D., eleven grandchildren and twelve great grandchildren. In addition to her husband Thomas Siok, Ruth was predeceased by infant daughter Maria Veronica Siok and brother Edwin Calcutt.
Funeral services for Ruth C. Siok who died January 27, will be held on Friday February 6 with a Liturgy of Christian Burial at 10 a.m. in Blessed Teresa of Calcutta Parish, Corpus Christi Church, 1085 Main St., Housatonic, with the Rev. William P. Murphy pastor, officiating. Burial will follow in St. Bridget’s Cemetery. Family will receive friends at a calling hour preceding the funeral from 8:30 — 9:30 a.m. at the BIRCHES-ROY FUNERAL HOME, 33 South St., Great Barrington. In lieu of flowers, expressions of sympathy in Ruth’s memory may be made to the Blessed Teresa of Calcutta Parish Corpus Christi Church Building Fund in care of the funeral home at 33 South Street, Great Barrington, MA 01230.
