Roland Edward Mintz, 90, of Sheffield died Sunday, January 29, 2023 at Fairview Hospital in Great Barrington. Roland was born in Sheffield on October 20, 1932, the son of Raymond and Dorothy (Ball) Mintz.
He proudly served his country in the U.S. Army during the Korean War, where he attained the rank of Sergeant. Roland was the first owner of the Sheffield Market where he was a butcher and anything else that was needed. Roland was a volunteer fireman in the town of Sheffield and was responsible for the homemade sausage at the pancake breakfasts. He was a President of Kiwanas, a proud member of the NRA, sponsored and bowled in many bowling leagues at the Cove, enjoyed hunting and fishing, and was a loving husband and father.
Roland is survived by his wife of 67 years, Gloria (Del Soldato) Mintz of Sheffield, whom he married on June 17, 1956; his daughter, Wanda A. Carlson and husband Lance R. Calson; and several nieces and nephews. Roland was predeceased by his two brothers, Dennis Mintz and William Mintz, and his two sisters, Lois Mallory and Pauline Wright.
In keeping with Roland’s wishes there are no services. Birches-Roy Funeral Home at 33 South Street, Great Barrington, MA 01230 is entrusted with arrangements. In lieu of flowers, expressions of sympathy in Roland’s memory may be made to the Sheffield Food Pantry in care of the funeral home. Condolences may be made through the funeral home’s website.
