Robert J. Silman, 83, of Great Barrington

He dedicated his professional life to the construction, preservation and sustainability of an esthetically pleasing and socially and environmentally conscientious built environment.

Robert J. Silman, 83, died peacefully at home in Great Barrington, Mass., on July 31, 2018.

Most beloved by his wife of 62 years, Roberta, children, Miriam (David Gardner), Joshua (Heidi) and Ruth (Tim Clark), grandchildren, Eli, Graham, Phoebe, Lily, and Jay, step-grandchildren Ben, Sadie and Sam, sister Judy Schmertz and dog Finn.

A leader in his field, Bob was the founder (1966) and President Emeritus of SILMAN, formerly Robert Silman Associates, and dedicated his professional life to the construction, preservation and sustainability of an esthetically pleasing and socially and environmentally conscientious built environment. His innovative approach will be remembered by his colleagues at numerous national and international foundations and the students he mentored so passionately at the Institute for Architecture and Urban Studies, Columbia, Yale and Harvard.

Close friends and family will cherish memories of his love of the outdoors, his garden, Mahler, and his travels all over the world. His kindness and generosity will be a legacy to all who knew him.

Funeral services will be held at Hevreh of the Berkshires, Sunday August 5 at 11 a.m. A memorial service in New York will be held later.

Donations in Bob’s memory can be made to the Center for Architecture, 536 LaGuardia Place, New York, N.Y. Finnerty & Stevens Funeral Home in Great Barrington, Massachusetts, is caring for the arrangements.

Cheryl A. Petell, 70, of Dalton

Calling hours will be held Thursday, June 19, 2025, from 4 to 7 p.m., at Dery-Foley Funeral Home in Dalton. A Liturgy of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Friday, June 20, 2025, at 10 a.m., at St. Agnes Church, officiated by Rev. Christopher Malatesta, Pastor. Burial will follow at Ashuelot Cemetery.

Lynn B. Herzig, 75, of Pittsfield

A memorial service for Lynn will be held on Wednesday, June 18, at 11 a.m., at the Christian Assembly in Pittsfield. There will be no calling hours, and burial will be private.

Marie Weatherhead, 90, of Lenox

A memorial service is planned at Roche Funeral Home in Lenox on Saturday, June 28, at 11 a.m. A reception will follow at Mazzeo's Ristorante in Pittsfield.
