What’s the most compelling thing about this property?
This house has great “curb appeal” on the outside and well-proportioned rooms on the inside, several with beautiful old wide-board flooring. It’s close to Sheffield’s covered bridge for taking a walk down a quiet (no traffic) road to the beautiful Housatonic River. Eagles and many other waterfowl reside here. Kayaking is great. The view across the road is of a beautiful barn, tastefully converted to living space, and a well-known antique shop. The location of this home is minutes to Guido’s and all of the wonderful Berkshire attractions.
For whom is this house perfect?
With its four spacious bedrooms, this would be a lovely family home. Very pretty, level back yard is ideal for children to play and pets to roam. A 3-car detached garage adds multiple uses. Because the house is in a commercial zone, one could live and/or have a business here. So, the house offers multiple possibilities.
What’s the most fun thing to do within five miles of this house?
Nearby, Bartholomew’s Cobble (owned by Trustees of Reservations) has many wonderful trails, educational classes, canoeing, etc. Or you can hike up Hurlburt’s Hill for spectacular 360-degree views of Connecticut, the Berkshires and New York State.
If this house could talk, what secret would it tell about its history?
It has an interesting history. Located in the part of Sheffield known as “The Plain,” this lovely two-and-a-half story Early Greek Revival has five bay front and eyebrow windows set into a deep cornice under a hip roof. Heavy corner pilasters and a south funeral door are distinct features of this building, which was built as a residence in c.1825 by Return E. Jones. In other chapters of its life it has had been owned by a Mr. Peters, a local realtor and a young family with 3 children. The current owner has been there for 33 years.
