Lenox — Bill Barclay calls the story “an absolute soap opera.” And he should know: As director of music at Shakespeare’s Globe Theatre in London, Barclay is well familiar with the steamiest and most improbably convoluted dramatic plots ever conceived. The story of Joseph Bologne (a k a the Chevalier de Saint-Georges) and his erstwhile roommate Mozart is the subject of Barclay’s latest musical work, “The Black Mozart,” which the Boston Symphony Orchestra commissioned for the inaugural season of the Tanglewood Learning Institute. Part “Amadeus” and part “Othello,” “The Black Mozart” is neither an opera nor a traditional musical. Barclay, who directs and narrates the production, calls it a “play with music.” Whatever you want to call it, “The Black Mozart” will be staged Monday, Aug. 19, at 8 p.m. in the Linde Center’s Studio E. It will be Barclay’s fifth season at Tanglewood as a writer or performer.
The Chevalier will be played by Chukwudi Iwuji in this performance, which features the Chevalier’s music performed by a string ensemble, with four actors.
