POEM: There are words

The right word can soothe, heal, comfort. Can teach, discover, surprise.

THERE ARE WORDS

…that give you chills
put you on edge
get you angry
make you happy
describe just how you’re feeling.

There are words
that shouldn’t be repeated —
used to shame, annoy, destroy.

Some words are melodic
others sharp and harsh.
Sensual words appeal
and can also
make you squirm.
Loving words give hope
and create joy.

Some words are short
many long and
difficult to pronounce.
Yet, when stated in the right
tone and tempo
can change a mood
an experience
even a relationship.

The right word can soothe
heal, comfort.
Can teach, discover, surprise.
Such a small yet powerful
tool, these words.
They slip off the tongue
so easily, yet, are so impactful —
use them well.
