POEM: The Helsinki Sequel

More Info
By Thursday, Jul 19, 2018 Arts & Entertainment

Skinny Frank Sinatra played the role in the original.

Remember? Elsa Lancaster, his wealthy mother,

married to a right-wing senator,

a Joe McCarthy clone, without a single scruple?

Also in the all-star cast, to name a fabled few:

Angela Lansbury, Laurence Harvey,

and 1960 Psycho star Janet Leigh.

The Manchurian Candidate was released in ‘62.

And now we have this remake,

starring … is it John Barron or Miller or David Dennison?

(It all depends on who he’s talking to and when.)

A Putin-puppet, he’s heftier than Frank. Looks more like

Sydney Greenstreet in The Maltese Falcon,

whose character’s name – you may recall — was Gutman.

The plot of the Helsinki remake

is much the same as the Sinatra flick,

the main difference

is

one was entertaining fiction, the other factual and deeply

creepy.
