Sonnet for Darling Maia

(In memory of Maia Stanton)

Forget the day’s concerns. A queen is crowned.

Our darling little Maia wears the gown

Reserved for Neptune’s daughters. Trumpets sound,

Demanding our obeisance. All fall down!

Along the stony margin of the strand,

Released to gather from the mortals’ town

Leander’s kin, so Unda scoured the land,

Intent upon a maiden. All fall down!

Not any one can grace the Sea God’s court.

Girls, who from vanity won’t play the clown,

May not descend to where the Mermaids sport

Among the shining fishes. All fall down!

It’s not for us to covet her renown.

Adore the newest angel. All fall down!
