POEM: Of Toads & Men

“How in the world can these senators walk around here upright when they have no backbone?”

 One journalist remarked to me,

“How in the world can these senators

walk around here upright when

they have no backbone?”

— from Ohio Senator Sherrod Brown’s February 5 New York Times Op-Ed article

Amphibians are vertebrates. This means,

although you may imagine otherwise,

that toads, though lumpy, do have spines,

unlike the human species we call toadies,

famous for their lack of backbone, as well

as for licking boots and presidential

bottoms, as evidenced, for fresh example,

by Lindsey Graham and Mitch McConnell.

BRIGHT SPOTS: Week of July 16, 2025

Here are only a few of the many bright spots.

I WITNESS: Republican legislators are allowing Donald Trump to destroy our country. So are the Democrats.

Here is exactly what the Democratic Party has done, writ large—or perhaps writ small—to oppose the Trump presidency and the Trump agenda: nothing.

CONNECTIONS: We shouldn’t be surprised that we still have to fight for democracy — even after 249 years

I don’t know how we arrived at a place where we thought everyone would support democracy because it was an intellectually superior form of government. All of human history contradicts that notion.
