POEM: New year

This is the time it ends, so newness can arrive to shake your soul...

The last night of the year
tip toes softly out.
Time for the door
to close behind the final
breath of these days
when a new portal opens
without the dings and scratches
these times incurred.

Sit back – but only for a moment
to reflect on the year that
has passed through your fingers.
Prepare instead to play
the chords and notes the new
year composes.

This is the time it ends
so newness can
arrive to shake your soul
of the dust and stones
collecting in your veins.

This day ignites
a clearness of thought
and excitement
looking forward to the
sparks that will fly
at midnight.

Oh, goodbye old year — joyful
and less so – all years
have sorrows and laughter.
This one has carved
indelible life into our
memories.

We will remember
and soon forget
as the new light rises
from the sea and shines
over all who awake to
greet the new day.
