Pittsfield — Via a press release issued by the city, Police Chief Michael J. Wynn announced his retirement. After 27 years with the department, Wynn is set to retire on July 8, 2023. He has served as chief since 2007.
According to his LinkedIn page, Wynn previously attended the United States Naval Academy from 1988 to 1989. He graduated from Williams College with a Bachelor of Arts degree in English Literature and American Studies in 1993, eventually graduating with a degree in Police Science from the state’s Criminal Justice Training Council Academy in 1996, and earning a Master of Arts degree in Criminal Justice in 2001.
He started with the Pittsfield Police Department as an officer in October 1995, eventually working through the ranks becoming a sergeant in April 2001, lieutenant in February 2005, captain in July 2007, and chief in December 2007. For the past 20 years, Chief Wynn has served as a Use of Force, Defensive Tactics, and Firearms instructor, and previously created a full-time training unit for the department.
Last April, Gov. Charlie Baker appointed Chief Wynn as a commissioner to the Peace Officers Standards and Training Commission.
“I have not arrived at this decision easily, and I do not make it without some regret,” Chief Wynn is quoted in the press release. “However, I’ve made peace with the decision, and I know it is right for me.” In the press release, he thanked his fellow members of the Police Department. “I want to take this opportunity to thank each and every one of you for the opportunity to work alongside you and to lead this outstanding organization,” Chief Wynn is quoted in the press release. “Through your hard work and assistance, you’ve helped make the Pittsfield Police Department one of the finest police agencies in the Commonwealth and beyond. It has been my honor and privilege to serve with every one of you and I will always treasure your professionalism, empathy, and courage.”
According to the city’s budget for Fiscal 2023, Chief Wynn’s salary is currently $143,503.
