After a long protracted illness, Philip Bennett Smerling passed in the place he loved the best, the Berkshires. He was born in Roslyn Heights, N.Y., the son of the late Harold Smerling and the late Louise (Smerling) Soroka.

Philip leaves behind his dear sisters, Janie (Richard) Garnett, twin Robin deWolfe, and Lisa Marx, as well as his nieces, nephews, cousins, and his beloved Aunt Valerie (Levy).
Philip’s creative talent was recognized at a very early age and then flourished after graduating from Skidmore College in Saratoga, N.Y. He was a brilliant designer who built some of the most beautiful homes on the Gold Coast of Long Island and beyond. He was a visionary who transformed many lives with his fresh creations. The open-concept kitchen was a PBS DESIGNS signature starting in the 70s.
Philip’s passion for model cars, which spanned 60 years, was unparalleled. He was a snappy dresser right down to his shoes and socks.
Philip lived a complicated life, reinventing himself when needed.
May his memory be a blessing.
A private burial will be held at Ahavath Sholom Cemetery in Great Barrington. Â Donations in Philip’s memory may be made to the Dialysis Unit at Fairview Hospital in care of Finnerty & Stevens Funeral Home, 426 Main St., Great Barrington, MA 01230.
