Peter Jason Callas, 61, died after a long, courageous struggle with cancer, on December 16, 2014, at his home in Great Barrington, Mass. He was born November 21, 1953, in Huntington, Long Island, New York. He attended schools in Huntington, graduating from Huntington High School in 1971 and Boston University in 1975. A computer programmer and electronics specialist by trade, he worked for a number of years at Grumman Corp., where he headed the computer lab.
Peter moved to Great Barrington about 20 years ago, where he worked for Phil Watson Vintage Lighting, restoring antique light fixtures. He was a loyal friend to many, known for his considerable mechanical abilities and dry wit.
Peter is survived by his mother, Maria Callas, a sister, Michelle Callas Morin, and a brother-in-law, Charles Morin, all of Lake Wylie, S.C.. He is also survived by nieces Jessica Morin Borenstein, Danielle Morin Rich, Stephanie Morin, and nephews Charles and George Morin, as well as a grand-niece, Evva Borenstein, and two grand-nephews, Drew Borenstein and Henry Rich.
Peter was predeceased in 1984 by his father, George P. Callas, an aerospace engineer and executive at Grumman. Peter leaves behind a large cadre of friends, fellow vintage Mercedes automobile enthusiasts, and his loyal feline companions, Dusky and Jake.
Funeral services for Peter J. Callas will be held on Saturday December 20, 2014 at the BIRCHES-ROY FUNERAL HOME 33 South Street, Great Barrington Mass. Family will receive friends beginning at 10 a.m., followed by a memorial service at 11 a.m. with Pallbearers, Chris Clark, Bob Denley, John Elling, Todd Hayward, Charles Morin, George Morin; Honorary Pallbearers Sharon Jablon, Jim Mercer, Fred Mercer, Krzszytof Olczyk, Cheryl and David Provencher, Nicole, William and Nicholas Robbins, Sam Shapiro, Stefan Schader and Adam Watson. Burial will take place in Greenlawn Cemetery, Housatonic. In lieu of flowers, expressions of sympathy in Peter’s memory may be made to the Massachusetts Eye & Ear Infirmary in care of the BIRCHES-ROY FUNERAL HOME.
