Pittsfield — A pedestrian was killed after he was struck by a westbound freight train on Wednesday, March 12.
According to a press release issued by Pittsfield Police Department Lieutenant Marc Maddalena, at around 6:22 p.m. on March 12, members of the department, the city’s Fire Department, and Action Ambulance responded to the area of the Big Y Supermarket on 200 West Street near where the tracks are.
Maddalena wrote that two males were observed on the train tracks east of where the incident occurred and started to walk westbound on the tracks.
A train approached, and the train operator observed the two males on the tracks.
As the train was coming down the track, the train operator tried to warn the two pedestrians by activating the train’s horn.
While one of the two males avoided the collision, the other male was hit by the train.
The male, who was not identified in the press release, was transported to Berkshire Medical Center by Action Ambulance and later died at the hospital.
The male who avoided getting hit by the train left the area before the emergency response and was not identified by the department.
