With crisis comes opportunity: to fry the planet. Using the coronavirus as an excuse, the Trump administration shut down all oversight on polluters by the EPA, giving the fossil fuel and chemical companies free reign to contaminate our air, water and soil to their heart’s content. Never mind that poisoning the air will only add to the suffering of people with respiratory trauma due to the virus.
Included in the many assaults on the environment are rollbacks of automobile fuel efficiency standards and, in the middle of unprecedented reduced demand for oil, declaring construction of the highly controversial KXL pipeline “essential services.” Meanwhile, the administration is using whatever power it has to delay the construction of the huge offshore wind projects currently in development.
