Of 3 state Senate candidates, Adam Hinds the most qualified

In his letter to the editor, Fred Clark of Housatonic writes: "Adam Hinds is the best equipped to continue the work that Senator Ben Downing and Representative Smitty Pignatelli have started because he has already been working on the issues of employment, health, addiction and other issues of concern to Berkshire County.

To the Editor:

We are fortunate to have three capable progressive candidates running for the Democratic primary for the open senate seat on September 8th. Adam Hinds stands out as the most capable based on the candidate’s history, positions, and approach to the job.

Rinaldo Del Gallo III is a perennial pol and lawyer on the Pittsfield scene. He has branded himself as the “Bernie Sanders Progressive.” His history is all about Pittsfield and I do not consider him ready to represent the issues of greater Berkshire county. Andrea Harrington and Adam Hinds are both capable, energetic, and are focused on helping people. Ms. Harrington is a defense attorney whose practice is focused on indigent and needy clients where she has seen first hand the effects of poverty and substance abuse. My impression of Ms. Harrington is that before entering this race she hadn’t been involved in the many issues affecting the Berkshires outside of her own practice. She has adopted a progressive agenda that addresses equitable pay, single payer healthcare, broadband, and environmental concerns. To read her profile, click the following link:

Adam Hinds is a former United Nation Middle East peace negotiator who grew up in the district. He has worked on the front lines of community issues, first in Pittsfield now in North Adams. He has connections with the people working to make a difference. He is the best equipped to continue the work that senator Ben Downing and Smitty Pignatelli have started because he has already been working on the issues of employment, health, addiction and other issues of concern to Berkshire County for years. Adam gets it. His position papers demonstrates a depth and clarity not present in the other candidates. He is ready to lead and advocate for economic growth, small town and school support, energy and the environment, and substance abuse. Please vote for Adam Hinds on September 8. The Great Barrington Democratic Committee is sponsoring a candidates forum August 29 at 5:30 p.m. at the Mahaiwe with all three candidates. A reception follows at Castle Street Cafe where you can meet the candidates.

Is there a more accurate name for ‘detention centers’?

Terms like “detention center” are not neutral—they are bureaucratic euphemisms that soften harsh realities. Journalists routinely reject government-preferred language when accuracy demands it. This is such a moment.

People might hesitate to run because they feel unqualified, worry about the time commitment, or fear losing. I’d argue those concerns shouldn’t stop anyone.
