Great Barrington — Very warm with only a few humid days. That would best describe this May’s weather.
My hops absolutely loved it, as did my Major Wheeler Honeysuckle vine.
Those plants love the conditions this May produced…warm but only slightly humid.
But there were three hot days of 90 or above, the third year with that many. The other years were 2001 and 1998. Those hot readings made up for the three cool, windy days with high readings in the 50s earlier in the month.
Overall, there were 18 days above average and 13 below. Some of the above’s were way above, but the lows were only slightly below average making the month the fifth warmest in the 58 years of record keeping
Precipitation total for the month was below the 58-year average, but greater since the turn of this century.
I counted the snow days in May and through the years there have been four days of measurable snow in May — of course in 1977 but also in 2020, 20002 and 1967.
All in all, a good start to the growing season. Let’s hope the rest of the summer is also.
May facts:
Hottest with a mean of 64: 1991, 2012
Coldest with a mean of 49: 1967 (nearly one-half inch of snow)
Wettest with 12.7 inches of rain: 1984 (A very wet Memoria Day weekend, 7.5 inches.)
Driest with 1.44 inches of rain: 1980 (15 of the 31 days were completely fair, 11 wet.)
