Nick Diller weather summary: October 2018 warm, humid and wet

The warm, humid and wet weather did a job on the foliage, not only in the Berkshires, but also in many other locations in the Northeast.

Great Barrington — This October was the 11th warmest in my 50-plus years of record keeping.

With an average high of 70, which was a first for the month, and an average low of 42, which turned out to be the fifth highest minimum and that gave us a mean of 56, second 2007.

More and more fall weather has continuing to be pushed later and later. This year we picked our last Sun Gold tomatoes Columbus Day weekend, unheard of just a few years ago. The warm, humid and wet weather did a job on the foliage, not only in the Berkshires, but also in many other locations in the Northeast.

Rainfall of over 5 and a half inches brought the fourth straight month of much greater than average rainfall.

Global warming is bringing many weather events such as hurricanes that are stronger and remain in one place longer with extreme amounts of rain. It’s the result of warmer ocean temperatures such as 85 degrees in Long Island Sound and readings in the 70s on the Grand Banks as far north as Nova Scotia.

I hope you have a good November.
