Nick Diller weather summary: February 2020, warm and dry

For the second time this century no temperature has gone to zero or below.

Great Barrington — Another warmer-than-average month this winter, as the snow drops in my front yard shows.  February finished the 6thwarmest in the now 55 years of Great Barrington weather keeping.

As a matter of fact, this February finished with daily high temperatures exceeding the average range on 21 of 29 days and the low readings on 25 of the 29 days.  Apparently, there was just enough cold days for the ski areas to make snow. My neighbors saying the skiing was not bad.

This has been a very warm winter as you probably are aware of. For the second time this century no temperature has gone to zero or below. In some of the outlying areas zero to perhaps 6 below readings have been reported, but not here. Only one other winter here has that happened, 2001-2002.

And if you are keeping my weather summary reports, you might notice how the daily low temperatures are not as cold as they used to be. In some cases, by far.

Precipitation, for the second month as below average. Now melt and rain only came to just over 3”. Usually it’s about 3 and a half. But I have not heard of any complaints. People I have talked to like it just way it’ has been. As long as ski areas can make snow, it has been fine. Gee, I purchased this state-of-the-art snow thrower that I have hardly used.  Last year I bought some snow shoes, hardly used those either.

With this warmer and drier winter, you wonder what the summer will bring.
