Nick Diller weather summary: April 2017, dry and warm

the weather conditions for the month gone by turned out to be just right for slow flowering of plants and fruit trees.

Great Barrington — Record warmth and dry conditions characterized April 2017. The month tied 1991 and 1998 as the warmest Aprils in the now 52 years of record keeping. Temperatures exceeded 80 four times including a record high of 86 on the 11th and a near record on Easter Sunday. But the key was no real cold temperatures. The lows were not as low.

The average low reading is 34 but because of many cloudy nights this year’s reading was 41, which is seven degrees warmer. Only 6 days did we see completely fair weather 24 hours.

On the precipitation side, April came in slightly below average. And this worked out very well because the snows of March melted more slowly. For April, snow and sleet measured 1.4 inches compared to an average of 2.4 and 10 inches one year ago.

So, the weather conditions for the month gone by turned out to be just right for slow flowering of plants and fruit trees.

If we can get through May with no frost — typically we might get a frost in the middle of the month — we should be good for a nice harvest this fall.

Have a wonderful month.
