Nick Diller: Thanksgiving Day weather forecast

To you and yours, may you have a wonderful day and give thanks for all the good things we have.

Great Barrington — Forecasters are predicting a cooler than average. Most of us may not care about turkey day itself, but on the travel days before and after the holiday.

Since I’m home for Thanksgiving grilling the turkey on my “Ole Weber” kettle, the only thing I‘m concerned about will be ambient temperatures and the winds. I’m thinking about grilling outside, which I’ve been doing on this holiday for 40 years which is my favorite time and recalling other Thanksgiving grilling escapes in all types of weather conditions.

I especially remember the day five years ago when temperatures fell to the single numbers with windchill readings below zero and grilling two turkeys for us and a friend. That day I used nearly a full bag of charcoal. It was the coldest turkey day in my almost 60 years of weather keeping.

It’s fun grilling in all kinds of weather, hot or cold, wet or dry. But most of you will cook the turkey in the oven and a lot of you will not have turkey at all. When I was growing up, my uncle would have venison. He would nearly always hunt and be successful and his mother (my grandmother) would always cook it for him. No one else wanted it.

Where we lived at the time was in northern New Hampshire at the 1,200-foot elevation. Many times it snowed on this holiday, and we would have snowball fights to work off the food. Ah, those days before we thought about global warming.

Well, this Thanksgiving is forecasted to be a little colder but dry. I will set up the grill just outside the kitchen door. We are feeding nine of us. After this is done I will log in the weather we had, adding it to the list of 59 years and think about all those great times in my life — my daughter watching the Macy’s parade and the rest of  the day watching football.

To you and yours, may you have a wonderful day and give thanks for all the good things we have.

I’m attaching my Thanksgiving weather record for you to look at and maybe reminisce.
