News Briefs: ROE Act forum; senior center legal clinic

The forum will consist of community leaders, including clergy and leaders of the statewide coalition promoting passage of the legislation, who will highlight the features of the bill and fine points of the legislative process.

Temple Anshe Amunim to host forum in support of ROE Act

Pittsfield — On Sunday, Feb. 9, at 2 p.m., Temple Anshe Amunim will host a forum in support of the passage of the ROE Act (S.1209/H.3320), proposed state legislation that will ensure that all women, regardless of income, age or legal status, have access to safe and legal abortions. In addition, the bill will remove current obstacles and expand access to women’s reproductive health care in Massachusetts. The forum will consist of community leaders, including clergy and leaders of the statewide coalition promoting passage of the legislation, who will highlight the features of the bill and fine points of the legislative process as well as a call to action with ways for the public to voice support. Those speaking will include Rabbi Liz P.G. Hirsch of Temple Anshe Amunim; Robyn Rosen of Temple Anshe Amunim and a Marist College professor; Rev. Joel Huntington of South Congregational Church; Katharine Burnett of Planned Parenthood; Judith Lamet of Temple Anshe Amunim; and Kate Froelich of NARAL Pro-Choice Massachusetts.

The event is sponsored by Temple Anshe Amunim, Hevreh of Southern Berkshire, South Congregational Church, Unitarian Universalist Church of Pittsfield, ACLU, NARAL Pro-Choice Massachusetts, Planned Parenthood, Religious Action Center of Reform Judaism and Women of Reform Judaism. Preregistration is encouraged and can be done via the Berkshire Edge calendar or by calling the Temple Anshe Amunim office at (413) 442-5910. Registration can also be done at the door at the time of the event.

Legal clinic now offered at Claire Teague Senior Center

Great Barrington — The Claire Teague Senior Center is now hosting a free weekly legal clinic Thursdays from 11:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Appointments are not required.

Staffed by the Berkshire Center for Justice, the clinic is intended for seniors age 60 and above. The drop-in legal clinic is sponsored in part by a grant from the Massachusetts Councils on Aging. A community lunch for seniors will take place at this time for a $2 suggested donation.
