Mrs. Muriel Rokos, 95, a longtime resident of Undermountain Road in South Egremont died August 24, 2015.
Born April 5, 1920 in Garnerville, N.Y., she was the daughter of Frank and Madeline Vilandry Mackey. She was a graduate of Haverstraw High school in Haverstraw, N.Y., and Merchant and Bankers Business School in New York, N.Y.
During World War II Muriel worked at Camp Shanks in Orangeburg, N.Y., and later was the principal secretary at the Congers Elementary School in Congers, N.Y.
Muriel married her husband, the late John J. Rokos, on January 27, 1945. Together, the couple moved to the Southern Berkshire area in 1965 where Mrs. Rokos worked as a secretary at the Mt. Everett Regional High School in Sheffield until retiring in 1982.
An active member of the community, Mrs. Rokos was a charter member of the Sheffield Historical Society and the Thursday Morning Club. She volunteered at Fairview Hospital, drove for the Road to Recovery program of American Cancer Society and was a member of the Quilters’ Guild of Great Barrington.
She was a communicant of Our Lady of the Valley Church in Sheffield and a member of the Catholic Women’s Club.
Muriel is survived by her daughter, Mary Leigh Lamson and her husband Doug of Brookfield, Vt., her sister Joan Talamini of Garnerville, N.Y., three grandchildren, Kristen and Andre Piscioneri and Christian Wohlfert, as well as six great grandchildren.
She was predeceased by her husband of 52 years, John J. Rokos, on November 30, 1997, as well as her daughter Jane Piscioneri and her sister Rose Lucas.
A Liturgy of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Saturday, August 29 at 11:30 a.m. at Our Lady of the Valley Church in Sheffield, conducted by Rev. Bruce Teague, pastor. Burial will follow at Our Lady of the Valley Cemetery in Sheffield.
The family will receive friends on Saturday from 10 a.m. until 11 a.m. at FINNERTY & STEVENS FUNERAL HOME in Great Barrington.
