Merger of Berkshire Hills, Southern Berkshire school districts long overdue

In his letter, William Foster writes: “Declining school enrollment and the re-emergence of a technical path enhance the need for a merger.’

To the editor:

Bravo to William Fields and Paul Gibbons for bringing forward the merging of the Southern Berkshire and Berkshire Hills regional school districts. I have talked to countless individuals over the years from both school districts and many cannot figure out why this was never pursued.

With the recent surge to again revisit the Monument Mountain renovation this merger is even more paramount. In a logical progression the merger should happen first, then access the need, and then renovate accordingly.

Two other items: the declining school enrollment and the re-emergence of a technical path only enhance the need for a merger. In a recent conversation with [state Rep. William] Smitty Pignatelli, he indicated that if the locals don’t come up with a merger plan, then the state will.

Our schools are the most costly of any town’s budget, and the children are our most valuable asset. Let’s enhance their education in a cost-effective manner.

Terms like “detention center” are not neutral—they are bureaucratic euphemisms that soften harsh realities. Journalists routinely reject government-preferred language when accuracy demands it. This is such a moment.

People might hesitate to run because they feel unqualified, worry about the time commitment, or fear losing. I’d argue those concerns shouldn’t stop anyone.
