Melvin Pope Wilson, 78 years old, of High Street in Great Barrington, died Saturday, January 14, 2017 at Fairview Hospital in Great Barrington at 4:30 p.m. after a long illness and recent stay at Fairview Commons.

A native and lifelong resident of Great Barrington Melvin was born on March 7, 1938, the son of Otis and Mattie Pope Wilson. He was educated in Great Barrington public schools.
At a young age he worked at the former Betros Market. For many years he worked at the Rising Paper Company and A.I.E.R. Economic Research as a driver and general maintenance.
As a child he was a member of Clinton AME Zion Church of Great Barrington.
Later, he joined Second Congregational Church in Pittsfield, Mass., where he was a church musician and sexton. He played for the church for over 20 years.
He enjoyed his music; he had a band and played at many functions in the area. He was a “Mister Fix-it.”
Melvin leaves to mourn six sisters, four brothers, his son Melvin A. Wilson, one granddaughter, his companion Barbara Wiggins, as well as numerous nieces, nephews and the pup.
He was predeceased by his parents, Otis and Mattie Wilson, along with three sisters and two brothers.
Melvin will be missed by all.
A Going Home service will be held on Saturday, January 21st at 11 a.m. at the Second Congregational Church, 50 Onota St., Pittsfield, Mass.
