May sounds of music reawaken dormant Housatonic School

In her letter to the editor, Ruth Heuberger writes: "Imagine the sounds of music that might fill the vacant and sturdy old school in the center of Housatonic if it were bought by one of the many prominent musicians who have made their name, good fortune, and even their temporary or permanent home here."

To the Editor:

How sad to read that the Music Store in Great Barrington must close; as reported, in large part due to the changing economic base of the community, making it unaffordable for many local and long-time residents to remain. We have found instruments there and are grateful for the gifts of musical talent and experience that family members have given to the Berkshires.

A thought we’ve had for years, even if it wouldn’t have a direct impact on the Music Store now: Imagine the sounds of music that might fill the vacant and sturdy old school in the center of Housatonic if it were bought by one of the many prominent musicians who have made their name, good fortune, and even their temporary or permanent home here — to repurpose the building as a music school in their name. Not only might it prove a fine legacy for the artist, but ensure the historic building’s revitalization and add greatly to the vibrancy of arts in the village and beyond. The ripple effect could strengthen the real economy of the area, offer the opportunity for employment for any number of excellent musicians living in the Berkshires and adjacent towns year round, and offer a unique possibility for youth and adults.  It might even serve as a magnet for some of our young people to remain or return after their K-12 education. And we never know what positive sparks it might ignite in their lives.

Is anyone out there connected or tuning in?

Flashing red-light warning

Jamie Minacci does not truly represent Stockbridge residents.

A response to Denny Alsop’s Letter to the Editor

Sadly, this is just the latest example of the lies and distortions that the small group of opponents of a well-planned project that will benefit every single taxpayer in Stockbridge will go to with their opposition.
