Martha Isabel Wichman, 95, of Mill River

Family was most important to Martha. When her children were younger, she was a Girl Scout leader and taught Sunday school at St. James Church.

Martha Isabel Wichman of Mill River, Mass., died on April 1, 2016 at Geer Nursing Home in North Canaan, Conn.

Born on March 27, 1921 in Great Barrington, Mass., she was the daughter of Frank and Martha Nicholson Beattie. Martha was raised and educated locally having graduated from the former Searles High School with the class of 1939 and then attended the former Berkshire Business College, now Berkshire Community College, earning an associate degree in business. Martha worked in many local business offices during her tenure.

Martha married the late Russell Wichman on January 3, 1942 and they enjoyed more than 50 years of marriage. Russell predeceased her in 1992.

Family was most important to Martha. When her children were younger, she was a Girl Scout leader and taught Sunday school at St. James Church. In her spare time, Martha loved to garden.

Martha leaves her two daughters, Linda Smith and her husband Steven of Oak Island, N.C., and Donna Wichman of Mill River. She also leaves her four beloved grandchildren: Lukus McDonnell, Timothy Tullock Jr., Brenda Trierweiler and Russell Raimer, as well as one great-grandchild, Jessica Trierweiler.

Aside from her husband, she was also pre-deceased by an infant daughter and her two brothers, Frank and Harold Beattie.

Funeral services for the late Martha Wichman will be held on Wednesday, April 6, 2016 at 12 noon with the Rev. Anne Ryder, presiding. Calling hours will be held one hour prior to the service, beginning at 11 a.m. at FINNERTY & STEVENS FUNERAL HOME, 426 Main St., Gt. Barrington, Mass. Burial will immediately follow the service at Elmwood Cemetery in Great Barrington.

The funeral service for Mary Lou Barnum will be held on Saturday, December 7, 2024, at 1 p.m., at Finnerty & Stevens Funeral Home in Great Barrington. The family will receive friends from 11 a.m. until the time of the service.

A memorial service will be held on Saturday, Nov. 30, at 11 a.m., at the Church on the Hill in Lenox, with Rev. Liz Goodman officiating. Calling hours will be held on Friday, Nov. 29, from 5 to 7 p.m., at the Roche Funeral Home.
