SHEFFIELD — In the only contested race in yesterday’s elections, Planning Board member Caitlin Marsden McNeill was reelected. Newcomer Robbie Cooper was elected, edging out Sam Stolzar for the second available seat on the board.
Town Clerk Felecie Joyce reports that a total of 279 voters cast ballots in the spring municipal elections. Sheffield currently has 2,540 registered voters. Incumbent Marsden McNeill received 209 votes, Cooper 143 and Stolzar 137. There were 69 blanks.
As The Edge reported earlier this month, the animating issue in the election seemed to be the proliferation of cannabis grow facilities in the town. A controversial but unsuccessful proposal by cannabis entrepreneur Jon Piasecki for a cannabis facility on Polikoff Road galvanized much opposition in that mostly residential neighborhood, whose residents include Stolzar, who ran on a platform of opposition to the growth of such facilities.
In addition to Marsden McNeill, reelected to other offices in uncontested races were William Tighe for moderator, Rene Wood for selectboard and Martin Mitsoff for library trustee. Mitsoff is also a member of the selectboard but is not up for reelection until next year.
