Margaret Louise Candee, 89, native of S. Egremont
South Egremont — Margaret Louise Candee, 89, of 46 Warner Road, died Sunday November 16, with her loving family at her side.
Margaret, born June 17, 1925 in South Egremont, was the daughter of Oscar and Grace Grahn. She attended local schools including the former Searles High School in Great Barrington. She also attended the Albany School for Nursing, but withdrew to tend to her ill mother. Margaret was predeceased by her husband of 51 years, Warren M. Candee.
Margaret, second oldest native resident of South Egremont, was a member of the Council on Aging and Egremont Historical Committee. She was employed at age 16 at Jug End Barn and became good friends with Mimi and Angus McDonald. She worked at several restaurants and nursing care centers, and helped out at the Egremon Town Hall. For her last 20 years she took care of the estates of second home owners in South County, and visited several elderly friends and took them shopping and to their doctor’s appointments.
She is survived by two daughters, Sherry L. Roberts of Richmond, and Mari Gasperini and her husband David of Ashley Falls; by four sons, James Candee and wife Melissa of South Egremont, Thomas W. Candee and companion Suzzanne Arres of Great Barrington; Howard Candee and wife Anne of Sheffield; Warren (Bud) and wife Evelyn of South Egremont; and Louise Rathbun Candee of South Windsor, Conn. James M. Candee Jr. (Jimmer) was the first grandchild that Margaret and Warren helped raise as one of their own.
Margaret had thirteen grandchildren; Stacy, Jason, Joshua, Jonathan Candee; Marki Lee (Roberts) Blackwell, PJ Roberts; Matthew and Anthony Gasperini; Thomas Jr. and April Candee; Kristle, Elizabeth, Tasha Candee; and eight great grandchildren ; and numerous step grandchildren and great grandchildren; she was predeceased by stepchildren Betty Wheeler and Theodore Candee.
Margaret enjoyed tag sales, painting, bird and animal watching, knitting, taking long rides in the car, traveling and caring for her family and friends. Margaret gave her entire family the best childhood experience anyone could ever hope for.
Margaret was a member of the Seventh Day Adventist Church in Canaan, Conn.
Funeral services for Margaret Candee were be held on Thursday, November 20, in the BIRCHES-ROY FUNERAL HOME with Pastor Charles Van Ausdall officiating. Burial followed in Sheffield Center Cemetery. In lieu of flowers expressions of sympathy in Margaret’s memory may be made to the Egremont Fire Department in care of the funeral home at 33 South Street Great Barrington, MA 01230.
