Malrangam (“Krishna”) Krishnamurti, 86, a resident of West Stockbridge, Mass., since December 2000, died on March 8, 2016 after a brief illness.
He is survived by his wife of 38 years Ilana Kleiner Krishnamurti, his son Mohan Krishnamurti and daughter-in-law Radha, his son Bala Krishnamurti, his granddaughters Dr. Kriti Mohan and Kiran Mohan, his grandsons Rahul Bala and Arjun Bala and his former daughter-in- law Roshni.
A native of India, Krishna devoted most of his professional life to the sea, first with the British Navy, then with the Indian Navy rising to the rank of Commander. Following a four-year assignment with the embassy of India in Paris, France, he joined the merchant marine as Captain, serving on dredgers and ocean-going cargo ships. After settling in the United States in 1979, he held various land-based positions with Peralta Shipping Corporation and Zim American-Israeli Shipping Corporation, both in New York City.
Krishna was a keen tennis player; a highlight of his tennis career was his participation in the Wimbledon Tennis Tournament on behalf of the British Navy. He was also an avid bridge player and continued to enjoy competitive games of Scrabble up to the end of his life.
