Lulu ‘n’ Hershey

Welcome to The Edge's new feature, "Lulu 'n' Hershey," the creation of Robert Ayers of Old Chatham, N.Y. "Lulu 'n' Hershey" chronicles the the world soaked in absurdity as witnessed by two highly observant poodles, the young Lulu and her deceased mentor and guide, Hershey.

 An introduction:

Six years ago I met the woman who would become my beautiful wife. I soon got to know her remarkable daughter Samantha and, most important of all, their chocolate standard poodle Hershey. He and I became fast friends in the years before he died at the grand old age of 14. Lulu, a fancy Canadian jet-black standard, came into our lives a few months later in the autumn of 2013. I’d never attempted to train a puppy before and Lulu proved both spirited and eccentric. Quickly, though, she acquired habits that made me realize that Hershey had never altogether left us. Just like him Lulu would bark up at the branches of trees as though this would conjure a squirrel into existence, she has become an enthusiast for Glenn Gould’s recordings of Bach, and – and this was what made me certain that Hershey was acting as her idiosyncratic spirit guide – she has developed an oil painting technique that is exceptional for such a young dog.

I WITNESS: Republican legislators are allowing Donald Trump to destroy our country. So are the Democrats.

Here is exactly what the Democratic Party has done, writ large—or perhaps writ small—to oppose the Trump presidency and the Trump agenda: nothing.

CONNECTIONS: We shouldn’t be surprised that we still have to fight for democracy — even after 249 years

I don’t know how we arrived at a place where we thought everyone would support democracy because it was an intellectually superior form of government. All of human history contradicts that notion.

I WITNESS: While we were reeling — with thanks to lovely Rita for putting it on my radar

As many of our best writers and talking heads have reminded us, continually, now is not the time to look away and capitulate.
