Local American traditional music: Oldtone Roots Music Festival

The festival will not only feature a more than 20 traditional American music performances from blue grass to New Orleans jazz, but will also include artistic workshops, dancing, instrument contests, and cuisine from local farms and vendors.

Hillsdale, N.Y. — The second annual Oldtone Roots Music Festival will take place this September 8th through 11th at Cool Whisper Farm in North Hillsdale, New York. The festival will not only feature a more than 20 traditional American music performances from blue grass to New Orleans jazz, but will also include artistic workshops, dancing, instrument contests, and cuisine from local farms and vendors.

The festival is local in all senses of the word. Beyond its location, two of the festival’s producers — Kip Beacco and Matt Downing — grew up in the Berkshires. For them, the festival is an opportunity for locals to participate in a traditional music experience without the detriments of large music festivals.

Beacco and Downing curated a mix of high-quality performers from across the country, in hope of creating a diverse sampling of American traditional music. Many of the bands, including the Bash Bish Bluegrass Band and the Two Man Gentleman Band, are local performers.

The festival is camper friendly, offering both day tickets and camping passes for the four-day program on 150 acres of farmland. Information about the festival, directions to Cool Whisper Farm, and tickets for the festival are available from the festival’s website.
