In regard to the School Street parking issue:
It occurs to me that no one has addressed the issue of the Torrico family’s right to sell the property. The owners have developed, managed and maintained the commercial property on School Street for the last 30 years.
The building contains two apartments and a laundromat. The Torrico family is now ready to move on from the demands of the daily obligations of being a landlord and operational manager of a laundromat.
One needs only to visit the site to observe that it is surrounded solely by commercial properties and parking lots. If ever there was a place for additional parking in Great Barrington, this lot is the perfect candidate.
The zoning for the property appears to meet the requirements so that it could be used for parking, and it is currently surrounded only by parking lots and commercial activity. Drive around and look for yourself.
It is my opinion that the Great Barrington Selectboard should vote to allow the parking lot to be developed, thereby allowing the sale of the property to proceed unencumbered.
