Let bygones be bygones

In a letter to the editor, Susan B. Barnes writes, "I don’t go along with all of the destruction of monuments depicting moments in the history of our country. I feel that it was part of our past and can be a reminder to us all how far we have come."

To the editor:

I just finished reading and watching all the videos from the Pittsfield rally on Sunday! What a wonderful celebration! The speakers were all great. My one comment is to the remark made by Dennis Powell about renaming our American House. I don’t believe in my heart of hearts that it has been called the White House because of any racist motivation. After all, it’s a WHITE house! I don’t go along with all of the destruction of monuments depicting moments in the history of our country. I feel that it was part of our past and can be a reminder to us all how far we have come. The confederate flags and symbols are another thing. We are now the United States of America and should honor that by only displaying our national flag. I would like to ask for caution before we destroy history and let bygones be bygones. Are we going to come to the point where we can no longer put up white picket fences for fear it will offend someone? Let’s all grow some thicker skin and go forward instead of backward!
