To the editor:
I attended the Town Hall Meeting in Lee on January 28 with State Sen. Paul Mark and newly elected State Rep. Leigh Davis. I left the meeting convinced that Davis is the right person in the right job at the right time. Her statements were clear and substantive; she has concrete plans and goals; and she knows the needs of a broad range of local constituents. I am certain that, even as a freshman legislator, she will provide the ideas and leadership we all sorely need at the moment.
Yale historian Timothy Snyder made this point in a recent blog on Substack:
Democrats who serve in state office as governors have a chance to profile themselves, or more importantly to profile an America that still works. Attorneys general in states have a chance to enforce state laws, which will no doubt have been broken.
He should have added that those who serve in state legislatures have a chance to model the kind of behavior our Congress seems no longer capable of: responsible, fair, respectful of the rule of law, and ultimately in service to country rather than party.
I believe Davis will model this behavior and look forward to following her activities in the months and years ahead.
