Lavon Darlene “Vonnie” Husom Frye, of Lenox, passed away on August 15, 2024. She was born in Dodgeville, Wisc., to Melvin and Alma Peterson Husom.
Lavon graduated from Dodgeville High School in 1946, after which she worked for Farmers Mutual Insurance company in Madison, Wisc. It was in Madison where she met Kenneth Frye, an army veteran who was attending the University of Wisconsin, and they were married in 1949. Together, Lavon and Ken raised three children, living in Wisconsin; Pennsylvania; and Massachusetts in Lee and South Egremont.
Lavon was a member of the Egremont Garden Club and was an accomplished “green thumb.” She and Ken enjoyed many ski vacations with their children when they were young, and she later took up cross-country skiing, which she enjoyed as much as she did the hikes she shared with Ken. Lavon enjoyed playing bridge, and she and Ken were a formidable team for many years. She also enjoyed traveling with Ken throughout the United States and around the world, extending Ken’s business trips into vacations. Later, after retirement, she and Ken traveled and cruised with friends. She was a member of Grace Episcopal Church in Great Barrington.
Lavon is survived by two sons, Michael of Pittsfield and Thomas of Grand Junction, Colo., and a daughter, Susan O’Connell (Brian) of Greenville, S.C. She is also survived by five grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; and two brothers, Norman and Dennis Husom. She was predeceased by her husband Ken in 2018 after 69 years of marriage, and by her sister Joyce Johnson.
A graveside service will be held on Friday, August 23, at 11 a.m., at Hillside Cemetery in Egremont, conducted by Rev. Cristina Rathbone, Rector, Grace Episcopal Church. Memorial donations may be made to Grace Episcopal Church, P.O. Box 114, Great Barrington, MA 01230. To send remembrances to Lavon’s family, please visit the website of Finnerty & Stevens Funeral Home.
