To the Editor:
The Great Barrington Special Town Meeting next Thursday, January 26th, at 6 p.m. in the Monument Mountain Regional High School auditorium, could very well prove to be the most momentous meeting since the one that approved the formation of the Berkshire Hills Regional School District more than 50 years ago. A large turn-out and overwhelming vote in favor of Warrant Article No. 2 will be an indispensable first step in the political process of introducing and passing a proposed Education Finance Reform Act in the state Legislature.
This Act, by changing the method of apportionment from a pupil headcount basis to an assessed property value basis, would improve the finances of every regional school district in the Commonwealth, and the BHRSD would be one of the biggest beneficiaries. This Act would achieve the double feat of assuring more robust funding for our school district while dramatically lowering the future taxes of GB property owners.
Please be there next Thursday. Your presence and your vote could not be more important.
