Know where to get your facts when it comes to the Department of Public Utilities’ review of Housatonic Water Works’ rate-hike request

If you have read anything on social media describing the proposed settlement between the DPU and HWW from any source other than the actual intervenors in the case, it is likely inaccurate.

To the editor:

The Department of Public Utilities’ (DPU’s) review of Housatonic Water Works’ (HWW’s) rate-hike request is complex and easily misunderstood. Erroneous information has been posted on social media, which has added to the confusion. Please rely only on reputable sources, not Facebook or emails.

To clarify one point of confusion, there are only four intervenors in the proceedings: the towns of Great Barrington, Stockbridge, and West Stockbridge and the Office of the Attorney General. No individual select board members are intervenors. Credible information regarding the rate case can only be obtained from actual intervenors. If you have read anything on social media describing the proposed settlement between the DPU and HWW from any other source, it is likely inaccurate.

We are all very concerned about the effects HWW’s rate-hike request will have on our residents. Misinformation circulated by individuals claiming to be intervenors will affect our residents’ peace of mind. The final decision rests solely with the DPU and does not require the intervenor’s affirmation.

The upcoming push to fund a new high school is focused on building something bigger and better while ignoring the fact that times have changed and that the goals must change as well.

Ms. Hritzuk’s recent Letter to the Editor regarding Stockbridge Town Meeting contains several inaccuracies

Ms. Hritzuk writes, "the meeting seemed designed to derail the citizen's position." I am aware of no reasonable basis for such an accusation.

Feeling disillusioned after attending my first Stockbridge Town Meeting

While I expected debate on Article 17 to be heated, I assumed that transparent and consistently applied rules would govern the meeting. What I observed instead was a concerted effort to put the citizens who submitted the petition at the grossest possible disadvantage.
