Kenneth Harvey TenBroeck Jr., 86, of Niverville, New York, died peacefully after a brief illness Monday, Feb. 20, 2018, at Columbia Memorial Hospital.
Ken was born April 14, 1931, in Great Barrington, the son of Kenneth H. Sr. and Katherine (McGowan) TenBroeck. He graduated from the former Searles High School class of 1949. Ken proudly served his country during the Korean War with the U.S. Army from 1952–54 in aviation maintenance. Ken attained the rank of sergeant and was awarded the Korean Service Medal with two Bronze Stars. Ken attended barber school from 1954–55. After graduating, Ken worked at Scotty’s Barber Shop in Lee. Then, in 1960, he opened his own barber shop, Ken’s Barber Shop, which he owned for 63 years, starting on Railroad Street in Great Barrington and then moving to his location on South Main Street in 1977. Ken was a member of the James A. Modolo Post #8183; a licensed pilot; a former member of Southern Berkshire Volunteer Ambulance Service for many years; and loved boating and times at Kinderhook Lake, moving there in 1990 when he turned the cottage into a full-time home from Great Barrington. He enjoyed gardening and spending time with his family.
Ken is survived by his wife, Joyce (Rowe) TenBroeck, whom he married July 15, 1956; one son: Robert TenBroeck and wife Susan of Great Barrington; one daughter: Karen Cardillo and husband Dominic of Stockbridge; three loving grandchildren: Christina Cardillo-Tafe, Brian Cardillo and wife Shaima, and Stephanie Curtiss; two great granddaughters: Ashley and Leah; one sister-in-law: Marlene TenBroeck of Egremont; one aunt; and several nieces, nephews and cousins. Ken was predeceased by two brothers, James TenBroeck and Thomas TenBroeck Sr.
Funeral services for Kenneth Harvey TenBroeck Jr. will be held Tuesday, Feb. 27, at 10 a.m. at the BIRCHES-ROY FUNERAL HOME, 33 South St., Great Barrington, MA 01230 with Rev. Randy Willburn officiating. Burial with military honors will follow in Elmwood Cemetery in Great Barrington. The family will receive friends Monday, Feb. 26, from 4 to 6 p.m. at the BIRCHES-ROY FUNERAL HOME.
